A misanthrope on vacation

The crowds here, the giftshops and fences and tourherds make me a misanthrope. Or more likely I already was one and today I’m getting ample opportunity to exercise this tendency.

It’s a little better once I drive to some of the viewpoints farther from the main lodge area — still crowded, but at least I can sit down and look for a while without somebody telling me to move because their five-year-old wants to take a family photo and I’m in the way.

Makes me want to go back to the low desert. Sure, killing heat. But at least I had the place to myself.

Moving right along.

Next time, go to the North Rim. It’s a long drive, but there are very few people there, even on a nice August day.

Yeah, I did eventually found some places way off to the east end of the south rim — I should dig up the little brochure and find the name on the map, but I’m too lazy — that was quiet enough for my apparently very demanding sensibilities. I do like people, really honest I do
